Acting Career jump start

Actor clipart.jpg
Planning out an acting career is a lot like playing darts. You can work on your aim (goals), practice your skills (training), size up your competition (strategy) and still you might not hit the target! The successful actors I work with have several traits in common. One is that they work hard on their “brand”. They are, in essence, the product and service that is marketed. Great pictures, ongoing training, solid representation and connections all contribute to the “game” of having a successful acting career. Communicating your success is another marketing tool used by the “winners”. Just by meeting new teachers, students, career coaches-you can “jump Start” your career and hit the bull’s eye.

Working Actors during the holidays

New Years in NYC.jpg The New Year celebration just outside tvi Actors Studio!

I have yet to hear an actor complain about working during the holidays. My guess is that having an opportunity to perform during this special time of year far outweighs personal feelings for doing anything else. I certainly felt that way when working as a singer/dancer in my twenties at Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular. It was so much fun to be a part of this well known holiday tradition, that I couldn’t think of anything more memorable. In fact, I would guess that, for actors and performers, working during the “season” is it’s own special brand of gift giving. Happy holidays from TVI!

(pictured here are NY Broadway Casting Directors and TVI Actors Studio Instructors Pat McCorkle and Stewart Howard)

This is the question many actors want the answer to. The answer is: be one. Think, act, plan, observe and commit to your decision to become a professional. Its not just a mind set but rather a foundation with which all motivation is focused. Your career is not a concept, but a reality! The long-term career actor has formed a comprehensive agenda that is adhered to; classes being at the top of the list. It is vital to the growth of the actor’s talent to stay “sharp”. Meeting industry professionals like agents and casting directors, working with other actors, listening to the business buzz, are all useful criteria to being a professional. Broadway Casting Director

Broadway Casting Director for West Side Story, Mr. Stuart Howard held a workshop at TVI on Tuesday December 15th at 7 PM. Because of his hectic schedule and his new broadway show, “The Nutty Professor” (slated for next year) he rarely has a chance to teach, but last night was the exception. His amazing career in Film Television and Broadway credits made for a truly memorable evening. Don’t miss out on other future events like this!

Voice-Over Casting

VO Class with Jeffrey Dreisbach.jpg

Voice-overs and voice acting is something that everyone seems to have interest in. What could be better, reading into a microphone, not being seen, lot of money….As it is with most things in the show business world, there is much more to it than that. First is, of course, an ability to perform consistently, in a studio environment. For many, this may not be as easy as it seems. Directors, audio technicians, Ad Reps., Copy-writiers, can make a pressured situation worse. Next, the actor must be able to offer several interpretations of the same script. Third, getting the job by having a great audition and demo-tape that has “professional” written all over it are essential ingredients that make a Voice-Over career a realistic pursuit. Finding out if you’ve got what it takes may simply be a matter of taking a class with a professional instructor who can help you.
